Abstract:
The aim of the study was to replicate the effectiveness
of a psycho-educational intervention to prevent depression
(IPPD; Lara et al., 2003) by incorporating more
specific training that would improve people’s skills at
obtaining social support. A randomized comparative
design was used, between two conditions with preand
post-treatment assessment and follow-up. Thirty
five women were randomly allocated, of which 23 remained
in the program. The MANOVA for depression
symptoms (BDI-II; Beck, 1996) and satisfaction with
the support (Sarason et al., 1983) provided showed
significant intra-group differences but not between
groups and no change in the number of supports. In
short, the results replicate those of the original as regards
effectiveness in reducing depression symptoms
and contribute information on its effect on satisfaction
with the support provided. However, they do not
allow one to conclude that the training to reinforce
this support enhances the effectiveness of the intervention
in the aspects evaluated.
