Abstract:

The purpose of the present study was to assess the prevalence of drug and alcohol consumption in two schools of a private university from Mexico City and to compare the results with those obtained in previous studies (2000 and 2002). The SAEU questionnaire was applied to 397 students of the Psychology (n = 202) and Communication Sciences (n = 195) departments, using the same procedures employed in the previous studies. Results showed increase in six of the monitored drugs; additionally a substantial increase in alcohol consumption and alcohol intoxication was observed. The results suggest the need of identifying the characteristics of problem drinkers and of designing preventive actions based on the identified characteristics.
